A new approach to the planet and all of its species requires the application of a broad spectrum of knowledge. Can interdisciplinary cooperation produce ground-breaking solutions in the field of climate care?

At this conference, international players from the realms of architecture, art, design, the environment and economics form four panels to discuss our collective responsibility to halt, or at least mitigate, climate change: Eat Love, Circular Society, Land Matters and Natural Technology. With keynote speeches by the internationally acclaimed architect Anna Heringer and the geographer and environmental social scientist Holly Jean Buck.

The conference program is compiled by the partner institutions of the VIENNA BIENNALE FOR CHANGE 2021 working together.

Please note the COVID-19 regulations:

Program

Panel I: EAT LOVE
The EAT LOVE panel approaches the topic of food and tomorrow's food culture through the lens of architecture, exploring new forms of food production, distribution and consumption as a means of tackling the climate crisis. EAT LOVE is also the motto of a mobile studio/think tank station, which is touring the city from May to October 2021. In collaboration with numerous partners, the city is rediscovered along with new forms of urbanism that originate with the local residents themselves. The findings and insights gleaned from this project in the areas of food, mobility, behaviour design and urbanism are to flow into the conference.

Panel II: CIRCULAR SOCIETY
Nature is circular. Taking nature’s established winning formula as point of departure, the CIRCULAR SOCIETY panel explores how to base our economies on biological and technical cycles and thereby transition from a linear concept of “take, use, waste” to a circular mode of operation. There is a focus on key areas such as food, textiles/fashion, and the building industry while highlighting some outstanding initiatives in these fields. The panel discusses why we have to move beyond the circular economy towards a truly circular society, and how design, architecture, and art can effectively promote such a transformation.

Panel III: LAND MATTERS
The LAND MATTERS panel explores the land issue in a context of the climate crisis, food security, international politics and colonialism, covering the spectrum from an international research platform to land-grabbing in the global south and east, to artistic positions. What is the role that land and our handling of land play in safeguarding a climate-friendly future? How can science, research, art and activism together increase awareness of the significance of the finite and valuable resource of land in the world's environmental and social balance?

Panel IV: NATURAL TECHNOLOGY
The NATURAL TECHNOLOGY panel has a focus on practices and streams of thought that engage with rethinking the relationship between nature and technology, reconfiguring our planetary connections through epistemological systems that undermine the extractivist logic that has long been facilitated by colonial legal mechanisms and late capitalism. We discuss a new mode of posthuman feminist phenomenology that understands our bodies as being fundamentally part of the natural world and not separate from or privileged to it. We also focus on non-western methods of ecological management, more specifically, Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), which describes indigenous and other traditional knowledge about local resources.
